Jane Human is a British painter and printmaker living and working in rural East Anglia and exhibiting widely in the UK.

At its heart Jane Human’s work is inspired by her love of open space and the seemingly  inconsequential landscapes around her, made intriguing by her closely observed studies of shifting colour and light, rhythm and texture. In the studio these notes and ideas crystallise to create a powerful sense of place within her paintings.

Jane is happy to undertake commissioned work.

Jane constantly explores the rich territory at the edges and overlap of abstraction and representation. Her bold mark making is enhanced by her unique working process which utilises a 2 tonne 1940’s offset press by which she builds countless fine layers of painted and mono-printed marks; each work will be in progress for many weeks as the image slowly resolves to create a textural richness and luminous colour.

This process of layering and mark transfer also allows for the possibility that traces of previous works can become the start point for the next, creating a link between one work and the next whereby a whole series of works; variations on a theme, can develop. Jane is interesting in exploring different interpretations of a similar view, and much of her work exemplifies the way in which subtle colour and tonal changes effect the mood of an image. Collected internationally, Jane’s work is also held by public and corporate organisations in the UK and has been selected for many prestigious national exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Royal Society of British Artists, National Open Art, and Originals National Print exhibition.

Commissions have included work for film, murals and backdrops for clients including Channel 4/Greenpoint films, The Royal Mail, Cunard, Dulux, The World of Interiors Magazine.

Past teaching roles include Senior Lectureships at University of Northumbria and Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University plus External Examiner roles at Middlesex University and UCA Maidstone 2010-14.

Jane has spoken at Cambridge Original Printmakers Biennale Sept 2018 and ‘In Conversation’ with sculptor Roger Hardy at Gallery East, Woodbridge May 2019. Other invitations have included lectures at Savannah Collage of Art & Design, USA and Bath, Wolverhampton, and Brighton Universities. She was also a Jury member for The Scottish Design Awards 2004 and Judge of the Jersey Open Art Competition 2008.

Currently Jane's preoccupations are with 2 different elements in the landscape; lone sentinel oak trees, of which there are many in Suffolk, and ponds, pools and natural waterways. She is working towards a solo exhibition at Gallery East in 2024, amongst other things.
